Katakana extras

Building block:

Words from other languages bring sounds Japanese didn't have. Katakana writes them with a long bar and small vowels.

How it works

  • A long bar ー holds the vowel before it: コーヒー.
  • A small ッ is the same pause as small っ: ベッド.
  • A small ァ ィ ゥ ェ ォ changes the kana before it: テ + ィ = ティ, フ + ァ = ファ.
