は, へ and を as particles

Building block:

Particles are small words that mark the parts of a sentence. Three of them are written with a kana that's said differently.

How it works

  • は as a particle is said like わ. It marks what the sentence is about.
  • へ as a particle is said like え. It marks where something goes.
  • を is said like お. It is only used as a particle, to mark the object.
  • Everywhere else, は and へ keep their usual sounds: はな, へや.

Examples

わたしは(I (as the topic))
どこへ(to where)
ほんを(a book (as the object))
