音・におい・味がする
Building block:perceiving a sound, smell or taste
With certain sensory nouns, がする reports a sound, smell or taste you perceive. Here する describes a sensation rather than someone doing an action.
How it works
- Use a sensory noun such as 音 (sound), 声 (voice), におい (smell), 香り (aroma) or 味 (taste), followed by がする.
- Use an adjective for the quality, or Nの for the source or resemblance: いいにおいがする (smell good), レモンの味がする (taste of lemon).
- Conjugate する normally: します, した and しない. In this sensory report, the noun takes が rather than を.
Examples
廊下から音がします。
I can hear a sound coming from the hallway.
台所からパンのにおいがします。
I can smell bread coming from the kitchen.
このお菓子はレモンの味がします。
This sweet tastes of lemon.
Notes
- This is a restricted sensory use, not a pattern for every noun or every sense.
- Contrast ordinary existence: 台所にパンがあります (there is bread in the kitchen). See ある.
- 気がする often means "have a feeling / impression". It does not necessarily report a literal sound, smell or taste.
