〜まくる

JLPT N1:

do intensely / over and over

A colloquial suffix meaning to do an action repeatedly, extensively or with abandon.

How to form it

  • Add まくる to the ます-stem: 買(か)います becomes 買(か)いまくる.
  • まくる conjugates as an ordinary godan る-verb: まくった, まくっている.
  • It suits actions that can be repeated or continued intensely.

Examples

昨日(きのう)は休(やす)みだったのでゲームをしまくった。

Yesterday was a day off, so I played games like crazy.

セールで欲(ほ)しかった服(ふく)を買(か)いまくった。

I bought loads of clothes I had wanted at the sale.

Notes

  • This is casual and expressive; avoid it in restrained formal writing.

Common mistakes

  • Attaching it to the dictionary form instead of the verb stem.
  • Using it with an action that cannot naturally be repeated or sustained.
