〜を余儀(よぎ)なくされる

JLPT N1:

be forced to

A formal construction saying that external circumstances force a person or organization into an unwanted action or change.

How to form it

  • Put the forced action before を as a noun, often a verbal noun: 中止(ちゅうし)を余儀(よぎ)なくされる.
  • The person or organization affected is the subject; the outside cause is normally stated elsewhere.
  • Use を余儀(よぎ)なくする when the subject is the circumstance that forces someone else.

Examples

台風(たいふう)のため、主催者(しゅさいしゃ)はイベントの中止(ちゅうし)を余儀(よぎ)なくされた。

The organizers were forced to cancel the event because of the typhoon.

病気(びょうき)で長期(ちょうき)休養(きゅうよう)を余儀(よぎ)なくされました。

Illness forced me to take an extended leave.

Notes

  • This is formal and especially common in news and reports.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a freely chosen action.
  • Putting a finite verb directly before を instead of a noun.
