〜て以来(いらい)

JLPT N3:

ever since

"Ever since X": a state or situation has continued from a past event up to now.

How to form it

  • Put the verb in the て-form and add 以来(いらい): 日本(にほん)に来(き)て以来(いらい).
  • Nouns take 以来(いらい) directly: 卒業(そつぎょう)以来(いらい) (since graduation).
  • The second half describes something that has continued, not a single event.

Examples

日本(にほん)に来(き)て以来(いらい)、ずっとここに住(す)んでいる。

I've lived here ever since I came to Japan.

入院(にゅういん)して以来(いらい)、運動(うんどう)していない。

I haven't exercised since I was in hospital.

Notes

  • It is more formal than てから, and stresses the whole period since.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a recent, short span. Say 昨日(きのう)帰(かえ)ってから, not 帰(かえ)って以来(いらい).
