〜かのように
JLPT N3:as if
"As if X": describes something by comparing it with a situation that is not actually true.
How to form it
- Put the plain form before かのように: 何も知らないかのように (as if he knew nothing).
- Nouns and な-adjectives usually take である: 本物であるかのように.
- Before a noun it becomes かのような, and at the end of a sentence かのようだ. まるで often comes first.
Examples
彼は何も知らないかのように、黙っていた。
He kept quiet, as if he didn't know anything.
まるで夢を見ているかのようだ。
It's as if I were dreaming.
Notes
- The か marks the comparison as unreal. 〜ように without か can describe something that really is so.
Similar meaning
- 〜ようだseems / is like
"Seems" or "is like"; the situation may well be true.
