〜きれない

JLPT N3:

can't…all

"Can't do it all" or "too much to…": there is more than can be finished, held or expressed.

How to form it

  • Start from the ます form and replace ます with きれない: 食(た)べます becomes 食(た)べきれない.
  • It is the negative potential of 〜きる. The positive exists too: 食(た)べきれる (can eat it all).

Examples

多(おお)すぎて、食(た)べきれない。

There's too much — I can't eat it all.

感謝(かんしゃ)してもしきれない。

I can't thank you enough.

Notes

  • With counting and feelings it means "countless" or "can't…enough": 数(かぞ)えきれない (countless).
