JLPT N3:try to / be about to
Describes the moment of trying to do something, or of being just about to do it — often when it doesn't happen.
How to form it
- Put the verb in the volitional form and add
(I tried to get up, but I couldn't).
- "Be about to": 出かけようとした時、電話が鳴った (just as I was about to leave, the phone rang).
- For "try not to", use (I tried not to cry).
Examples
Just as I was about to leave, the phone rang.

Notes
- ようとしない means someone will not even try: 彼は話そうとしない (he won't talk).
Common mistakes
- Using the dictionary form.
