〜方(かた)

Turns a verb into a noun meaning "the way of doing it" or "how to do it".

How to form it

  • Start from the ます form and replace ます with 方(かた): 使(つか)います becomes 使(つか)い方(かた) (how to use).
  • The object takes の instead of を: 漢字(かんじ)の書(か)き方(かた) (how to write kanji).
  • For する verbs, the noun takes の and する becomes 仕方(しかた): 勉強(べんきょう)の仕方(しかた) (how to study).

漢字(かんじ)の書(か)き方(かた)が分(わ)かりません。

I don't know how to write the kanji.

Common mistakes

  • Reading 方(かた) as ほう. After a verb stem it is かた.
  • Keeping を. Say 漢字(かんじ)の書(か)き方(かた), not 漢字(かんじ)を書(か)き方(かた).
