〜し

JLPT N4:

and what's more

Lists reasons or points, often leading to a conclusion: "X, and Y, (so…)".

How to form it

  • Put し after a plain or polite form: 安(やす)いし, 安(やす)いですし.
  • Nouns and な-adjectives add だし: 静(しず)かだし.
  • The conclusion can be stated or left for the listener to work out.
  • も often marks the items: 時間(じかん)もないし、お金(かね)もない (I have no time, and no money either).

Examples

この店(みせ)は安(やす)いし、おいしいし、最高(さいこう)だ。

This place is cheap, and the food's good — it's the best.

時間(じかん)もないし、お金(かね)もないし、行(い)けない。

I've got no time and no money, so I can't go.

Notes

  • A single し hints that there are other reasons: 雨(あめ)だし、今日(きょう)はやめよう (it's raining, and so on, so let's not go today).
