一番(いちばん)

Means "the most": the highest in a group.

How to form it

  • Put 一番(いちばん) right before the adjective, or before 好(す)き: 一番(いちばん)高(たか)い (the tallest), 一番(いちばん)好(す)き (like best).
  • Mark the group with で, or with の中(なか)で: 日本(にほん)で一番(いちばん)高(たか)い山(やま) (the tallest mountain in Japan), 果物(くだもの)の中(なか)で (of all fruit).
  • Ask with a question word + が: 何(なに)が一番(いちばん)好(す)きですか (what do you like best?).
