〜ましょう

JLPT N5:

let's

A polite "let's…". With か it becomes "shall we…?" or "shall I…?".

How to form it

  • Start from the ます form and replace ます with ましょう: 行(い)きます becomes 行(い)きましょう.
  • Add か to suggest or offer: 行(い)きましょうか (shall we go?), 手伝(てつだ)いましょうか (shall I help?).
  • The casual version is the volitional form: 行(い)こう.

Examples

一緒(いっしょ)に行(い)きましょう。

Let's go together.

昼(ひる)ご飯(はん)を食(た)べましょうか。

Shall we have lunch?

Notes

  • To invite someone while leaving them room to say no, 〜ませんか sounds more considerate: 一緒(いっしょ)に行(い)きませんか.
  • ましょう includes the speaker. To ask someone else to do something, use 〜てください.
