を

JLPT N5:

object marker

Marks the direct object — the thing an action is done to. It is read お.

How to form it

  • Put を after the thing that receives the action: 水(みず)を飲(の)みます (I drink water).
  • With verbs of movement, を marks the place you move through or leave: 公園(こうえん)を歩(ある)く (walk through the park), 家(いえ)を出(で)る (leave the house).

Examples

本(ほん)を読(よ)みます。

I read books.

毎朝(まいあさ)、公園(こうえん)を散歩(さんぽ)します。

I walk in the park every morning.

Notes

  • Casual speech often drops を: ご飯(はん)食(た)べた? (did you eat?).

Common mistakes

  • Using を for what you get into or onto. Say バスに乗(の)る (get on the bus), not バスを乗(の)る.
