Combined kana
Building block:yōon
Take a kana from the い column (き し ち に ひ み り and their marked forms) and add a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ. The two blend into one sound.
How it works
- Size matters: きや is two sounds, きゃ is one.
- To type one, drop the i: きゃ is kya, しゃ is sha, ちょ is cho.
