〜ませんでした

Conjugation:

polite past negative

The polite past negative of verbs: "didn't".

Conjugation rules

  • Start from the ます form and replace ます with ませんでした: 食(た)べます becomes 食(た)べませんでした.
  • Every verb works this way, including する (しませんでした) and 来(く)る (来(き)ませんでした).

Examples

ichidan
食(た)べる(to eat)食(た)べませんでした
godan
行(い)く(to go)行(い)きませんでした
irregular
来(く)る(to come)来(き)ませんでした

Example sentences

昨日(きのう)は勉強(べんきょう)しませんでした。

I didn't study yesterday.

Notes

  • In casual speech use なかった: 食(た)べなかった.
  • 〜なかったです, as in 食(た)べなかったです, is also polite and common in conversation.

Common mistakes

  • Using ません for the past. 昨日(きのう)行(い)きません is wrong; say 昨日(きのう)行(い)きませんでした.
