〜なくて

Conjugation:

not…, and / because not

Joins a negative to what comes next: "not X, and…" or "since not X, …". It often gives the reason for a feeling or a result.

Conjugation rules

  • Start from the ない form and replace ない with なくて: 分(わ)からない becomes 分(わ)からなくて.
  • This works for everything the ない form covers: ある gives なくて, 高(たか)くない gives 高(たか)くなくて, and 静(しず)かじゃない gives 静(しず)かじゃなくて.

食(た)べる(to eat)食(た)べなくて

Example sentences

お金(かね)がなくて、何(なに)も買(か)えませんでした。

I didn't have any money, so I couldn't buy anything.

意味(いみ)が分(わ)からなくて、困(こま)りました。

I didn't understand what it meant, and I was stuck.

これはペンじゃなくて、鉛筆(えんぴつ)です。

This isn't a pen, it's a pencil.

Notes

  • As a reason, なくて leads to a result you do not control, like a feeling or something you could not do. Before a request, suggestion or decision, use ないので or ないから instead.
  • It is also the base of 〜なくてもいい (don't have to).
