〜ない
Conjugation:plain negative
The plain (casual) negative: "don't" or "won't" for verbs, "isn't" for adjectives and nouns. Many patterns are built on it, such as 〜ないでください.
Conjugation rules
- For ichidan verbs, replace る with ない.
- For godan verbs, change the last う-sound to its あ-sound, then add ない. Verbs ending in う take わ, not あ.
- する becomes しない and 来る becomes 来ない (irregular).
- ある (to exist, to have) has no あらない. Its negative is simply ない.
- い-adjectives replace the final い with くない. な-adjectives and nouns add じゃない, or ではない in more formal speech and writing.
- ない itself conjugates like an い-adjective: なかった (didn't) and なくて.

Notes
- The polite negative of verbs is ません. Adjectives add です: 高くないです. See also 〜ない / 〜ません.
Common mistakes
- Using くない with な-adjectives: 静かじゃない, not 静かくない. Watch out for きれい and 有名, which are な-adjectives even though they end in い.
