〜ないでください
JLPT N5:please don't
Asks someone politely not to do something: "please don't…".
How to form it
- Put the verb in the ない form and add でください: 撮る becomes 撮らないでください.
- In casual speech, 〜ないで alone is enough: 心配しないで (don't worry).
Examples
ここで写真を撮らないでください。
Please don't take photos here.
心配しないでください。
Please don't worry.
Notes
- Rules and signs often use the stronger 〜てはいけない, or the formal ご遠慮ください (please refrain).
Common mistakes
- Using なくて instead of ないで. Say 忘れないでください, not 忘れなくてください.
Similar meaning
- 〜てはいけないmust not
States a rule: "you must not".
- 〜なdon't!
A blunt "don't!": 触るな.
