〜な
Conjugation:don't!
The plain negative command: "Don't…!". It is common but blunt, and can sound rough.
Conjugation rules
- Add な to the dictionary form: 行く becomes 行くな.
- Nothing else changes, so every verb works the same way, including するな and 来るな.
Examples
godan
入る(to enter)入るな
ichidan
忘れる(to forget)忘れるな
irregular
来る(to come)来るな
Example sentences
触るな!
Don't touch it!
Notes
- For a polite request not to do something, use 〜ないでください.
- The positive command is the imperative: 行け (go).
Common mistakes
- Confusing it with the casual ます-stem + な, which is a soft "go on, do it": 食べな (go on, eat). Only the る separates it from 食べるな (don't eat).
