〜てもいい
JLPT N5:may / it's OK to
Gives or asks for permission: "you may…", "is it OK if I…?".
How to form it
- Put the verb in the て-form and add もいい: 座る becomes 座ってもいい.
- Add です to be polite, and か to ask: 座ってもいいですか (may I sit down?).
- Adjectives and nouns work too: 高くてもいい (it's fine if it's expensive), 明日でもいい (tomorrow is fine too).
Examples
ここに座ってもいいですか。
May I sit here?
写真を撮ってもいいです。
You may take photos.
Notes
- いい can be replaced by the more formal かまいません: 座ってもかまいません.
- Refusing with 〜てはいけません sounds strict. People usually say すみません、ちょっと… instead.
Similar meaning
- 〜てはいけないmust not
The opposite: "must not".
- 〜なくてもいいdon't have to
"Don't have to": 行かなくてもいい.
Same form, different meaning
- 〜てもeven if
ても without いい means "even if".
