〜ません

Conjugation:

polite negative

The polite negative of verbs: "don't" or "won't".

Conjugation rules

  • Start from the ます form and replace ます with ません: 食(た)べます becomes 食(た)べません.
  • Every verb works this way, including する (しません) and 来(く)る (来(き)ません).

Examples

ichidan
食(た)べる(to eat)食(た)べません
godan
行(い)く(to go)行(い)きません
irregular
来(く)る(to come)来(き)ません

Example sentences

肉(にく)は食(た)べません。

I don't eat meat.

明日(あした)は行(い)きません。

I won't go tomorrow.

Notes

  • The past is ませんでした (didn't).
  • In casual speech use the ない form: 食(た)べない.
  • 〜ないです, as in 食(た)べないです, is also polite and common in conversation. ません sounds more formal.
  • Adding か makes an invitation: 一緒(いっしょ)に行(い)きませんか (won't you come with me?).
