な-adjectives

JLPT N5:

adjectives that take な

Adjectives that take な before a noun and otherwise behave like nouns, like 静(しず)か (quiet) and 元気(げんき) (well, lively).

How to form it

  • Before a noun, add な: 静(しず)かな部屋(へや) (a quiet room).
  • At the end of a sentence, add です or だ, just as with a noun: この部屋(へや)は静(しず)かです.
  • The negative is じゃない or ではない and the past is だった or でした.
  • To join to what follows, add で. To make an adverb, add に.

Examples

negative
静(しず)か(quiet)静(しず)かじゃない
past
静(しず)か(quiet)静(しず)かだった
静(しず)か(quiet)静(しず)かで
静(しず)か(quiet)静(しず)かに

Example sentences

この部屋(へや)は静(しず)かです。

This room is quiet.

元気(げんき)な子供(こども)ですね。

What a lively child.

Notes

  • A few な-adjectives end in い, like きれい (pretty, clean) and 嫌(きら)い (disliked).
  • 好(す)き (liked) and 嫌(きら)い mark the thing liked or disliked with が: 猫(ねこ)が好(す)きです.
  • 大(おお)きな and 小(ちい)さな exist beside 大(おお)きい and 小(ちい)さい, but they only go before nouns.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out な before a noun. Say 静(しず)かな町(まち), not 静(しず)か町(まち).
  • Conjugating it like an い-adjective. Say きれいじゃない, not きれくない.
