〜じゃない / 〜ではない

JLPT N5:

noun / な-adjective negative

The negative of nouns and な-adjectives: "is not X".

How to form it

  • Add じゃない after the noun or な-adjective: 学生(がくせい)じゃない, 静(しず)かじゃない.
  • ではない means the same and sounds more formal; it is the usual choice in writing. では is read でわ.
  • To be polite, add です, or use ありません: 学生(がくせい)じゃないです, 学生(がくせい)ではありません (the most formal).
  • The past is じゃなかった or ではなかった.

Examples

な-adjective
静(しず)か(quiet)静(しず)かじゃない
noun
学生(がくせい)(student)学生(がくせい)じゃない
past
静(しず)か(quiet)静(しず)かじゃなかった

Example sentences

これは私(わたし)の本(ほん)じゃないです。

This isn't my book.

ここは静(しず)かではありません。

It isn't quiet here.

Notes

  • Said as a question, じゃない can mean "isn't it?": きれいじゃない? (isn't it pretty?).

Common mistakes

  • Using くない with な-adjectives. Say 静(しず)かじゃない, not 静(しず)かくない.
