〜くない

JLPT N5:

い-adjective negative

The negative of い-adjectives: "not X".

How to form it

  • Replace the final い with くない: 高(たか)い becomes 高(たか)くない. いい becomes よくない.
  • To be polite, add です (高(たか)くないです), or use くありません (高(たか)くありません), which sounds more formal.
  • The past negative is くなかった: 高(たか)くなかった.

Examples

い-adjective
高(たか)い(expensive)高(たか)くない
いい
いい(good)よくないnot いくない

Example sentences

Common mistakes

  • Using くない with な-adjectives. Say きれいじゃない, not きれくない.
  • Treating 高(たか)いじゃない as the negative. In speech it means "isn't it expensive!".
