〜こそ
JLPT N3:(this) very one / for sure
Strongly emphasises the word before it: "this is the very one", "precisely", "this time for sure".
How to form it
- Put こそ after a noun, in place of は, が or を: 今年こそ (this year for sure).
- It can follow other particles: あなたにこそ (to you above all).
- After a reason, からこそ means "precisely because": 好きだからこそ、厳しく言う (I'm hard on you precisely because I care).
Examples
今年こそ、合格したい。
This year, I'm going to pass for sure.
こちらこそ、よろしくお願いします。
The pleasure is mine.
Notes
- こちらこそ is a set reply: "no, thank you" or "likewise".
Same form, different meaning
- 〜てこそonly by / only when
てこそ: "only by doing".
