〜にしては
JLPT N3:for (a…)
"For a X": the result is surprising given what X is usually like.
How to form it
- Put にしては after a noun, or after a plain verb: 初心者にしては (for a beginner), 初めて作ったにしては (for a first attempt).
- X names a standard, such as a role or a season, and the rest of the sentence says it does not match.
Examples
初心者にしては上手だ。
You're good for a beginner.
冬にしては暖かい。
It's warm for winter.
Notes
- Unlike わりに, it does not normally follow an adjective: 高いわりに is fine, but 高いにしては is not.
Common mistakes
- Confusing it with 〜にしても (even if).
Similar meaning
- 〜わりにconsidering
"Considering"; also works after adjectives.
Same form, different meaning
- 〜にしてもeven if
にしても: "even if", "even granting".
