〜につれて

"As X, Y": as one thing changes, another changes gradually along with it.
How to form it
- Put a verb in the dictionary form, or a noun of change, before につれて: 年を取るにつれて (as you get older), 時間の経過につれて (as time goes by).
- Both halves describe gradual change, so verbs like なる, 増える (increase) and 上がる (rise) are common.
Examples
年を取るにつれて、忘れっぽくなる。
As you get older, you become more forgetful.
時間が経つにつれて、悲しみは薄れていった。
As time passed, the sadness faded.
Common mistakes
- Using it for a single event or a sudden change.
