as / following

Two meanings: "following X" (instructions, rules), and "as X, Y" (one change goes along with another).

How to form it

  • "Following": put にしたがって after a noun such as 指示(しじ) (instructions) or 規則(きそく) (rules): 指示(しじ)にしたがって行動(こうどう)してください.
  • "As": put the verb in the dictionary form: 山(やま)を登(のぼ)るにしたがって、空気(くうき)が薄(うす)くなる (the higher you climb, the thinner the air).
  • It is also written に従(したが)って.

Examples

指示(しじ)にしたがって、行動(こうどう)してください。

Please follow the instructions.

山(やま)を登(のぼ)るにしたがって、空気(くうき)が薄(うす)くなる。

The higher you climb, the thinner the air gets.
