〜っぱなし

JLPT N3:

left on / the whole time

"Left ~ed": something is left in a state it should not be left in, or an action goes on for a long time. It is casual and often critical.

How to form it

  • Start from the ます form and replace ます with っぱなし: つけます becomes つけっぱなし (left on).
  • It works like a noun: つけっぱなしで, つけっぱなしにする.
  • It can also mean doing the same thing the whole time: 立(た)ちっぱなし (standing the whole time).

Examples

電気(でんき)をつけっぱなしで出(で)かけた。

I went out and left the lights on.

一日中(いちにちじゅう)立(た)ちっぱなしで疲(つか)れた。

I'm tired from standing all day.

Notes

  • Common examples: 開(あ)けっぱなし (left open), 出(だ)しっぱなし (left out), 負(ま)けっぱなし (losing every time).
