〜とは限(かぎ)らない

JLPT N3:

not necessarily

"Not necessarily": rejects a general assumption — it is often true, but not always.

How to form it

  • Put the plain form before とは限(かぎ)らない: いいとは限(かぎ)らない.
  • Nouns and な-adjectives can take だ: 日本人(にほんじん)だとは限(かぎ)らない.
  • It often comes with 必(かなら)ず (always), いつも or 誰(だれ)でも (anyone).

Examples

高(たか)いものがいいとは限(かぎ)らない。

Expensive things aren't necessarily good.

努力(どりょく)すれば必(かなら)ず成功(せいこう)するとは限(かぎ)りません。

Hard work doesn't always lead to success.

Common mistakes

  • Reading it as a flat denial. 高(たか)いものがいいとは限(かぎ)らない still allows that expensive things are often good.
