〜て初めて
JLPT N3:only after / not until
"Only after X did Y": the first event was needed before a realisation or result became possible.
How to form it
- Put the verb in the て-form and add 初めて: 病気になって初めて.
- The second half is usually a realisation, such as 分かる or 気づく (notice), or something that only then became possible.
Examples
病気になって初めて、健康の大切さが分かった。
It was only when I got ill that I realised how precious health is.
親になって初めて、親の苦労が分かった。
Only when I became a parent did I understand what my parents went through.
Common mistakes
- Using it for a simple first time. For "for the first time", 初めて alone is enough: 初めて納豆を食べた.
Similar meaning
- 〜てこそonly by / only when
"Only by doing X": X is what gives Y its value.
- 〜てからでないとnot until after
"Not until after X", as a condition for something yet to happen.
