JLPT N2:

not until after

Says something cannot happen or be decided until the first action has been completed.

How to form it

  • The main clause is normally negative or expresses inability:

Examples

We cannot decide until after checking with the person.

I cannot buy it until I have seen the actual item.

Common mistakes

  • Following it with an unrestricted affirmative result.
  • Reducing it to ordinary 〜てから, which only gives a sequence.
