A paired negative construction: unless the first condition is met, the second result cannot be reached or judged.
How to form it
- Put the first verb in the ない form and add ことには: 試してみないことには.
- The second half must also be negative or express impossibility, such as 分からない or 始められない.

Common mistakes
- Making the result affirmative.
- Confusing it with 〜ないことはない, which grudgingly admits possibility.
