〜はずだ

JLPT N4:

should be (expected)

Says something is expected to be true from what you know: "should", "is supposed to", "must".

How to form it

  • Put the plain form before はずだ: 来(く)るはずだ, 着(つ)いているはずだ.
  • Nouns take のはずだ and な-adjectives take なはずだ: 休(やす)みのはずだ, 静(しず)かなはずだ.
  • はずだった means something was supposed to happen but did not.

Examples

彼(かれ)はもう着(つ)いているはずです。

He should have arrived by now.

このバスは十時(じゅうじ)に来(く)るはずだ。

This bus is supposed to come at ten.

Notes

  • はず is about expectation, not duty. For "you should study", use 〜べき or ほうがいい.
  • For "can't possibly be", use 〜はずがない.
