JLPT N4:

it's been decided / it turns out

Says something has been decided, often by someone else or by circumstances: "it's been decided that…", "it turns out that…".

How to form it

  • Put the verb in the dictionary form or the ない form and add ことになる.
(I'm being transferred to Osaka next month).
  • ことになっている describes a rule or arrangement.

Examples

I'm being transferred to Osaka next month.

It was decided to cancel the meeting.

Notes

  • People also use ことになりました for their own decisions, especially in announcements, because it sounds modest: 結婚(けっこん)することになりました (we're getting married).
