〜んです / 〜のです
JLPT N4:explanation
Presents a sentence as an explanation or background, or asks for one: "it's that…", "the thing is…".
How to form it
- Put the plain form before んです: 頭が痛いんです (the thing is, I've got a headache).
- Nouns and な-adjectives take なんです: 休みなんです.
- んです is conversational and のです is more formal. Casual speech uses んだ, or just の: 頭が痛いの.
- In a question it asks for an explanation: どうして遅れたんですか (why were you late?).
Examples
どうして遅れたんですか。
Why were you late?
すみません、頭が痛いんです。
Sorry — I've got a headache.
Notes
- 〜んですが / 〜んですけど opens a request or topic softly: ちょっと聞きたいんですが… (there's something I'd like to ask…).
Common mistakes
- Using だ before んです. Say 休みなんです, not 休みだんです.
- Using it for every statement. A plain fact with nothing to explain does not need it: 私は学生です.
