〜ので

JLPT N4:

because (softer)

Gives a reason in a soft, matter-of-fact way: "because", "since", "so".

How to form it

  • Put the plain form before ので: 降(ふ)っているので, 高(たか)いので.
  • Nouns and な-adjectives take なので: 休(やす)みなので, 静(しず)かなので.
  • In polite speech, the part before ので can be polite too: 降(ふ)っていますので.

Examples

雨(あめ)が降(ふ)っているので、行(い)きません。

It's raining, so I won't go.

静(しず)かなので、よく勉強(べんきょう)できます。

It's quiet, so I can study well.

Notes

  • ので presents the reason as a plain fact, so it suits polite explanations, excuses and requests: 熱(ねつ)があるので、今日(きょう)は休(やす)ませてください.
  • から states the reason more directly and personally, and is the usual choice before a command.

Common mistakes

  • Using だ before ので. Say 休(やす)みなので, not 休(やす)みだので.
