〜までに
JLPT N4:by (a deadline)
Gives a deadline: "by X". The action is done at some point before then.
How to form it
- Put までに after a time: 金曜日までに (by Friday).
- After a verb in the dictionary form, it means "before that happens": 暗くなるまでに帰る (get home before dark).
- The main verb is an action that gets completed, like 出す (hand in) or 帰る (go home).
Examples
金曜日までに宿題を出してください。
Please hand in your homework by Friday.
十時までに帰ります。
I'll be home by ten.
Common mistakes
- Using までに with an action that lasts. Say 三時まで待つ (wait until three), not 三時までに待つ.
Similar meaning
- までuntil / as far as
"Until": the action goes on all the way to that point.
