まで
JLPT N5:until / as far as
Marks the end point in time or space: "until", "as far as", "to".
How to form it
- Put まで after a time, place or event: 三時まで (until three), 駅まで (as far as the station).
- Pair it with から for a range: 月曜日から金曜日まで (from Monday to Friday).
- After the dictionary form of a verb, it means "until that happens": 雨がやむまで待つ (wait until the rain stops).
- The action goes on the whole time up to that point.
Examples
駅まで歩きます。
I'll walk to the station.
三時まで待ちます。
I'll wait until three.
Notes
- After a noun, まで can also mean "even": 子供まで知っている (even children know it).
Common mistakes
- Using まで for a deadline. 五時までに帰る means "be home by five"; 五時まで means something goes on until five.
Similar meaning
- 〜までにby (a deadline)
"By" a deadline: the action happens at some point before it.
