JLPT N4:

(someone else) wants to

Describes what someone else wants to do, judging from how they behave: "(he, she) wants to…".

How to form it

  • Start from 〜たい, drop the final い and add がる: 行(い)きたい becomes 行(い)きたがる.
  • It is a godan verb, and is usually in the

Examples

My little brother wants to play outside.

He wants to go to Japan.

Notes

  • ほしい works the same way: ほしがる (someone else wants a thing).
  • It describes what you can see of someone's wish, so it can sound impolite about a superior. Report their words instead:
  • A related use describes outward signs of feelings rather than wishes: see emotional 〜がる.

Common mistakes

  • Using plain たい for someone else.
