JLPT N4:must / have to
Says something is necessary or required: "must", "have to".
How to form it
- Start from the ない form and replace ない with なければならない: 行かない becomes 行かなければならない.
- The polite form is なければなりません.
ならない sounds a little more formal.
- Casual speech shortens it to 行かなきゃ or 行かなくちゃ.
Examples
I have to hand in the report by tomorrow.
I have to take my medicine.
Notes
- The opposite, "don't have to", is 〜なくてもいい.
Common mistakes
- Answering "do I have to?" with a negative of this pattern. For "no, you don't have to", say
