〜の

JLPT N4:

nominalizer

Turns a verb or clause into a noun, so it can be the subject or object of a sentence: 泳(およ)ぐのが好(す)き (I like swimming).

How to form it

  • Put の after a plain verb or い-adjective: 泳(およ)ぐの, 見(み)るの.
  • な-adjectives and nouns take なの: 静(しず)かなの.
  • Then add the particle the sentence needs: のが好(す)き, のを見(み)た, のは難(むずか)しい.

Examples

日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)するのは難(むずか)しい。

Studying Japanese is hard.

彼(かれ)が泳(およ)ぐのを見(み)た。

I saw him swim.

Notes

  • Verbs of seeing and hearing take の, not こと: 歌(うた)うのが聞(き)こえる (I can hear someone singing). So do verbs like 待(ま)つ and 手伝(てつだ)う: 彼(かれ)が来(く)るのを待(ま)つ (wait for him to come).
  • 〜のは〜だ puts the focus on the last part: 私(わたし)が好(す)きなのはこの歌(うた)だ (what I like is this song).
