〜こと

JLPT N4:

nominalizer (abstract)

Turns a verb or clause into a noun for an action or fact: 本(ほん)を読(よ)むことが好(す)きです (I like reading books).

How to form it

  • Put こと after a plain verb or い-adjective: 読(よ)むこと. な-adjectives take なこと: 大切(たいせつ)なこと.
  • Many patterns need こと and cannot take の: 〜ことができる, 〜ことがある, 〜ことにする.
  • Before だ or です at the end of a sentence, こと is used: 趣味(しゅみ)は写真(しゃしん)を撮(と)ることです (my hobby is taking photos).

Examples

本(ほん)を読(よ)むことが好(す)きです。

I like reading books.

私(わたし)の夢(ゆめ)は日本(にほん)で働(はたら)くことです。

My dream is to work in Japan.

Notes

  • With 好(す)き and similar words, の and こと are both fine: 泳(およ)ぐのが好(す)き, 泳(およ)ぐことが好(す)き.

Common mistakes

  • Using の where こと is required. Say 泳(およ)ぐことができる, not 泳(およ)ぐのができる.

Similar meaning

  • 〜のnominalizer

の: for what you see or hear directly, and before 見(み)る, 聞(き)く and 待(ま)つ.
