〜させてください

JLPT N4:

please let me

Asks politely for permission to do something yourself: "please let me…".

How to form it

  • Put the verb in the causative, change it to the て-form, and add ください: 説明(せつめい)させる becomes 説明(せつめい)させてください.
  • Godan verbs use せて: 行(い)かせてください (please let me go). Ichidan verbs and する use させて: 考(かんが)えさせてください (let me think about it).

Examples

私(わたし)に説明(せつめい)させてください。

Please let me explain.

少(すこ)し考(かんが)えさせてください。

Let me think about it for a moment.

Notes

  • More polite versions are 〜させていただけませんか and 〜させてもらえませんか.
  • 〜させていただきます announces very politely what you are about to do: 説明(せつめい)させていただきます.

Common mistakes

  • Using the plain て-form. 説明(せつめい)してください asks the listener to explain.
