Gives the cause of a result, with blame (せいで, "because of") or with gratitude (おかげで, "thanks to").
How to form it
- Nouns take の: 台風のせいで, 先生のおかげで.
- Verbs and い-adjectives use the plain form: 寝坊したせいで, 薬を飲んだおかげで.

- せいで is for bad results, and おかげで for good ones.
Examples

Notes
- おかげで can be sarcastic about a bad result: 君のおかげで遅刻したよ (thanks to you, I was late).
- せいか means "perhaps because": 年のせいか、疲れやすい (maybe it's my age, but I get tired easily).
- おかげさまで is a set phrase for "I'm fine, thank you".
Common mistakes
- Using せいで for a good result. Use おかげで.
