〜という
JLPT N4:called / named
Names or describes something: "a X called Y", or "the (story, idea) that…".
How to form it
- Put the name before という and the kind of thing after it: 田中という人 (a person called Tanaka), すき焼きという料理 (a dish called sukiyaki).
- Use it for names the listener may not know.
- After a clause, it gives the content of a noun such as 話 (story) or 意見 (opinion): 彼が結婚するという話 (the news that he's getting married).
- という is usually written in hiragana. In casual speech it becomes って: 田中って人. See 〜って.
