〜って

JLPT N3:

casual という / quote

A casual word that does the work of と and という: quoting, reporting what you heard, naming, and raising a topic.

How to form it

  • After a quote, it replaces と: 行(い)くって言(い)ってた (he said he's going).
  • At the end of a sentence, it reports what you heard: 彼(かれ)、もう帰(かえ)ったって (he says he's already gone home).
  • Before a noun, it replaces という: 田中(たなか)って人(ひと) (someone called Tanaka).
  • After a topic, it asks about or defines it: お盆(ぼん)って何(なに)? (what's Obon?).

Examples

彼(かれ)はもう帰(かえ)ったって。

He says he's already gone home.

明日(あした)は休(やす)みだって。

Apparently tomorrow's a day off.

Notes

  • After ん, it often becomes て: 何(なん)て言(い)った? (what did they say?).

Common mistakes

  • Using it in formal speech or writing.
