〜そうだ
JLPT N4:I heard that
Reports something you heard or read: "I heard that…", "they say…".
How to form it
- Put the plain form before そうだ: 来るそうだ, 高いそうだ, 行ったそうだ.
- Nouns and な-adjectives add だ: 雨だそうだ, 静かだそうだ.
- To be polite, use そうです. The part before it stays plain.
Examples
明日は雨だそうです。
I hear it's going to rain tomorrow.
彼は来月結婚するそうだ。
Apparently he's getting married next month.
Notes
- Name the source with 〜によると: 天気予報によると、明日は雨だそうです.
- This そうだ does not change for past or negative. Put the tense in the part before it: 来なかったそうだ (I heard they didn't come).
Common mistakes
- Confusing it with the そうだ of appearance. 降るそうだ means you heard it will rain; 降りそうだ means it looks like rain.
