〜として
JLPT N4:as
Gives the role, position or capacity in which someone or something acts: "as a…".
How to form it
- Put として after the role: 教師として働く (work as a teacher).
- Before a noun, use としての: 親としての責任 (my responsibility as a parent).
Examples
私は教師として働いています。
I work as a teacher.
この部屋は倉庫として使っています。
We use this room as a storeroom.
Notes
- としては can mean "for my part" or "as far as X is concerned": 私としては賛成です (for my part, I agree).
Common mistakes
- Using として for a likeness. Say 子供のように泣いた (cried like a child); 子供として means "in the role of a child".
Similar meaning
- 〜ような / 〜ようにlike / such as / as
"Like": a comparison, not a role.
